Bold Forbes was foaled on March 31, 1973 at Eaton Farms in Lexington, Ky. He was sired by Irish Castle, out of Comely Nell, by Commodore M. His bloodlines trace back to champions such as Bold Ruler, Nasrullah, and Bull Lea.
Bold Forbes won seven of eight starts in 1975, and was selected as Champion Two-Year-Old Colt in Puerto Rico. He was named the Champion Three-Year-Old Colt of 1976 after he captured both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.
He was retired to stud after his three-year-old season. He sired 13 crops through 1990, with 460 name foals and 304 winners, 30 of which were stakes winners. Collectively his offspring have won more than $18 million.
In April 1991, he was moved to the Kentucky Horse Park. He lived there until his death on August 9, 2000 when he was humanely euthanized due to renal failure and complications from gastroenteritis. Bold Forbes is buried at the Hall of Champions.
